On supported iPhones, iOS disables wired charging and accessories when it detects liquid in the Lightning or USB-C connection. That protection exists because electricity plus moisture can corrode the tiny contacts and create permanent connection problems. The alert does not tell you which end is responsible: the phone, the cable, or an attached accessory.
Do this immediately
- Unplug both ends. Disconnect the cable from the iPhone and the power adapter.
- Remove the case if it is wet. Dry the outside of the phone with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Hold the connector downward. Tap the iPhone gently against your hand to help excess liquid leave the opening.
- Set the cable aside separately. A wet cable end can trigger the warning again even after the phone dries.
- Leave both in moving room-temperature air. A normal dry room or a fan moving air across—not into—the connector is enough.
Dry it without damaging the port
Apple recommends waiting at least 30 minutes before one careful retest. If the alert reappears, liquid may remain under the connector pins; complete drying can take up to 24 hours.
Rice is especially unhelpful here. It does not pull moisture from beneath connector contacts, and small particles can enter the port. Heat can damage seals and the battery. Compressed air can drive moisture or debris farther inside.
If the phone was never wet—or is already dry
Work through the charging path one variable at a time:
If only one cable causes the warning, stop using that cable. Its connector may be damp, contaminated, worn, or damaged.
Condensation after coming indoors from cold weather, bathroom steam, a damp pocket, sweat, rain, and drink residue can all reach a connector without a dramatic spill.
With the phone off, use a bright light. Green, blue, white, or dark residue; distorted pins; or a burned-looking area needs inspection rather than home cleaning.
If every known-good Apple-compatible cable triggers the alert after 24 dry hours, the port may contain residue or corrosion, or its sensing path may need service.
Should you use Emergency Override?
Emergency Override tells the iPhone to charge despite the alert. It is not a repair and it does not prove the connector is safe. Charging wet contacts can cause corrosion or permanent damage.
Use the override only when power is genuinely urgent and the need outweighs the hardware risk—for example, access to emergency communication with no other charging option. Do not use it repeatedly as a workaround for a warning that keeps returning.
When the connector needs inspection
- The alert remains after 24 hours in a dry environment
- Several known-good dry cables trigger it
- The port shows colored residue, corrosion, bent pins, or heat damage
- Charging starts and stops, works only at an angle, or the cable no longer seats fully
- The phone had liquid exposure and now has heat, battery drain, camera fog, audio problems, restarts, or other symptoms
A shop should inspect before replacing parts. Residue removal may solve it; a damaged connector may need replacement; liquid that traveled beyond the port may require a broader internal assessment.
What to send for a useful answer
- Exact iPhone model and whether it uses Lightning or USB-C
- The exact warning text
- Any rain, steam, snow, sweat, spill, or cold-to-warm transition
- How long it has dried and which cables you tested
- A clear, well-lit photo of the connector

Why does it say Liquid Detected when there is no liquid?
The phone may be sensing condensation, conductive residue, corrosion, a damp cable, or a connector fault. Test a different dry cable only after the phone has had time to dry.
How long should I wait?
Apple suggests trying again after at least 30 minutes. If the alert returns, drying can take up to 24 hours.
Can I clean the port with alcohol?
Do not pour or apply liquid into an assembled iPhone connector. If residue or corrosion is suspected, let a technician inspect and clean it with the device opened and power safely disconnected.
Can I use MagSafe?
