Check the lens before changing software
Look for a small slider beside the webcam, a side switch, or a keyboard key with a camera symbol. Use your exact model’s manual: there is no universal function-key shortcut. Some keys require Fn; some do not. Move a physical shutter gently to its open position.
Dell illustrates how a physical shutter covers the lens. An electronic privacy switch can also make a camera appear absent or show a crossed-out icon, as Microsoft explains. If opening or enabling it restores the preview, that control explains the result.
Allow the app you actually use
Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. Following Microsoft’s permission guide, check:
- Camera access: on.
- Let apps access your camera: on, with the Camera app enabled in the list.
- Let desktop apps access your camera: on if your call app or browser needs it. These apps may not appear as individual toggles; this setting applies to desktop apps as a group.
Enable only the access you intend to grant. If controls are grayed out or managed by your organization, ask the device administrator. Do not bypass work or school policy. If security software reports a camera block, ask its support or your administrator for help.
Test a local preview, then the call app
Save your work, close video-call apps and camera-using browser tabs, then select Start → Power → Restart. Waking from sleep is not a restart. Open Start, search for Camera, and check the built-in webcam’s preview. Close Camera before reopening the call app.
- Camera works; the call preview does not
- This points toward the call app’s selection, permissions, or state. In its video settings, select the built-in webcam rather than a disconnected USB or virtual camera. Retest the preview before joining a meeting.
- Both previews stay black
- Recheck the shutter. Then check detection below. A light beside the lens indicates use on equipped models; it does not prove that usable video is reaching the app.
- No camera found, or a camera-in-use error
- Record the full message. Microsoft identifies
0xA00F4244as camera not detected and0xA00F4243as another app or process using it. An error code alone does not identify a broken part.
Calling in Edge? Windows access and website permission are separate. On your trusted call site, allow its camera request. For a previously blocked site, review Edge Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site Permissions → All sites, then that site’s Camera permission. Menus vary by browser version. Microsoft documents these controls.
Missing is a clue, not a diagnosis
In Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras, look under Connected cameras and Disabled cameras. If your webcam is disabled and you are authorized to enable it, select it and choose Enable; administrator access may be required. A connected camera can show a preview here. See Microsoft’s camera settings guide.
If absent, search Start for Device Manager. Look under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers. Use Action → Scan for hardware changes once, then recheck. Record any warning or continued absence; do not uninstall devices at random.
Windows Hello works. Does that clear the webcam?
No. Windows Hello can use camera access even when app access is off, and a laptop may have separate color and infrared cameras. Successful face sign-in does not establish that the color webcam and call-app permissions are working.
Use the maker’s path for this laptop
For a safe, undamaged laptop, back up important files before deeper software work. Search Start for Get Help and request camera troubleshooting, then check Settings → Windows Update. Save work before any required restart and repeat the same Camera preview.
Still failing? Use the laptop maker’s official support page for the exact model and Windows version. Some integrated cameras need more than a generic webcam driver. For example, Dell’s MIPI-camera guidance covers specific configurations including XPS 13 9340 and XPS 14 9440, with an Intel camera package and prerequisite drivers. Follow the applicable model instructions or ask support; this is not a recipe for every Dell.
Should I reset Windows or remove the driver?
A factory reset or Windows reinstall is disproportionate to these first checks and can remove apps or files. Driver removal can leave the camera unavailable until the correct package is restored. Stop and get model-specific help before erasing, changing firmware, or forcing a generic driver.
Bring the evidence to the next step
Ask the maker or HDR for assessment if the camera remains absent or fails in both previews after these checks. Seek help sooner after a drop, spill, hinge damage, or repair. A known-working USB webcam can be a temporary option on an otherwise safe laptop; working USB video does not prove the built-in camera’s hardware is faulty.
Send the exact laptop model, Windows version, full error, shutter position, Camera-versus-call results, detection status, and when it began. Mention recent updates, damage, and backup status. Crop private meeting or account details from screenshots.
