PS5 · Storage is not the same as play

PS5 game on USB
won’t play?

Copy the PS5 game to playable storage first.

A PS5 game can be stored on USB extended storage, but it must be copied back to the console’s storage or a compatible installed M.2 SSD before you can play it. Compatible PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage. If the drive and game are visible, this difference is expected behavior; formatting the drive will not change it.

For PS5 consoles with USB extended storage. This covers game location and safe connection checks—not a missing disc, a broken HDMI output, or a full recovery procedure. Menu labels can vary with system software.

01 / Before moving anything

Do not format a readable game library

Finish the game, save normally, and close it. Record the exact message and whether the drive appears under Settings → Storage → USB Extended Storage. A visible drive with a PS5 game waiting to be copied is a different problem from a drive that disappears during transfers.

Formatting erases the drive.

Both Format as USB Extended Storage and Format as exFAT erase contents. Neither makes a PS5 game playable on USB. An existing PS4/PS5 extended-storage drive does not need formatting just to use it on this PS5.

Leave the cable and power undisturbed during copying, moving, or formatting. If the drive contains something you cannot replace, or you are unsure which drive a prompt targets, stop before accepting any erase.

02 / Same title, different version

The console name does not tell you the game version

A PS5 can hold PS4 and PS5 versions of the same title. In Game Library, highlight the game and press X, then choose … to see version options when you own both. Sony says the PS4 version shows PS4 beside the title; the PS5 version shows the title without that label. See Sony’s version-selection instructions.

PS5 version on USB extended storage
Storage only. Copy it to console storage or compatible installed M.2 storage to play.
Compatible PS4 version on USB extended storage
Can play directly from that drive. A PS5 upgrade changes which version and storage rule applies.
PS5 version on console or supported internal M.2 storage
Playable from that location. A remaining launch error needs its own evidence.

Most PS4 games are supported on PS5, with exceptions. Do not delete a version or its saved data just to test this distinction.

03 / A recognized USB drive

Copy one PS5 game back, then launch that copy

  1. From the games home screen, open Game Library → Installed.
  2. Highlight the PS5 game stored on USB, press the controller’s Options button, and choose Copy to console storage.
  3. Wait for the copy to finish, then select that game to play. Keep the USB connection stable throughout.

This is the copy-back route in Sony’s USB extended-storage guide. Do not select Delete or Format as a substitute for Copy.

If there is not enough destination space, check Settings → Storage → Console Storage. You can move a less-used game out: in Game Library, highlight it, press Options, choose Move Games and Apps, select the USB destination/tab and game, then Move. Read the source and destination before confirming. Sony’s storage guide separates game installations from saved data. Do not clear the Saved Data menus to make room for a game.

I already have an internal M.2 SSD. Can I play from it?

Yes, if it is a supported M.2 SSD installed in the console’s expansion slot. In Game Library, highlight the game, press Options → Move Games and Apps, then use Movable to M.2 SSD Storage when both drives are present. Select the game and Move. Follow Sony’s M.2 instructions. An SSD connected through a USB enclosure still uses the USB storage path; a fast drive alone does not remove the PS5 playback restriction. No console disassembly is needed for the basic USB copy-back check.

04 / Only if the drive is absent or unstable

Use a SuperSpeed port, matched to your model

Connect USB extended storage directly to a SuperSpeed USB port, without a hub. Sony lists SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or later and a capacity of 250GB–8TB; compatibility is not guaranteed for every drive. Use one USB extended-storage drive at a time.

CFI-1000 model group

The front USB-A port is Hi-Speed, not the extended-storage port. The front USB-C and both rear USB-A ports are SuperSpeed 10Gbps.

CFI-2000 / CFI-7000 groups

Both front sockets are USB-C, but only one is SuperSpeed 10Gbps. Both rear USB-A ports are SuperSpeed 10Gbps. Match the front port using Sony’s diagram.

Use the official USB port diagrams for your exact console; connector shape alone is not the speed rating. Check the cable and socket visually without inserting tools. Stop for damaged contacts, liquid, a burnt smell, or unusual electrical heat.

Before reconnecting, choose Settings → Storage → USB Extended Storage → Safely Remove from PS5, then disconnect. Alternatively, shut down fully and wait for the power indicator to go out. Do not unplug in rest mode. Reconnect directly with a compatible data cable; follow the maker’s instructions for a separately powered drive.

A computer asks to initialize, erase, or format the drive.

Cancel if you want to keep the existing contents. USB extended storage and an ordinary FAT32/exFAT media or backup drive serve different roles. A computer prompt is not evidence that a PS5 game needs formatting to run. Do not run repair or formatting tools on the only copy as an experiment.

05 / Read the outcome

Keep the observation separate from a guessed part

The PS5 game starts after copying back
Its storage location explained this failure. The USB drive may still be useful for storing PS5 games and playing compatible PS4 games.
Copy finishes, but a disc, lock, or other launch message remains
Record that exact message. Copying files does not remove ownership or disc requirements. A PS4-disc-to-PS5 upgrade still needs the original disc in a suitable disc drive. Follow the game-specific or PlayStation support path; do not format USB storage.
Copy repeatedly fails or the drive disconnects
After the safe port/cable check, stop repeating long transfers. The cable, drive, power, or console connection may need assessment; the symptom does not identify one failed component.
06 / Keep progress before deeper changes

The USB game installation is not a save backup

Game files and your progress are different data. PS5 saved data cannot be copied individually to a normal USB drive the way PS4 saves can. Sony offers PlayStation Plus cloud storage for saves, or a full-console backup to a separate FAT32/exFAT USB drive. The USB extended-storage game drive cannot also be that backup destination.

Before a proposed reset, erase, console replacement, or recovery procedure, use Sony’s backup instructions and confirm completion. Games on USB extended storage or M.2 are not included in that console backup. Restoring a console backup erases the console’s existing data; it is not a harmless launch test.

Seek PS5 assessment or PlayStation support for persistent disconnections, a damaged port, repeated copy errors, or a console that cannot complete basic storage operations. Send the CFI model group, drive/cable details, chosen port, exact error, game version and location, and copy-back result. State which data is irreplaceable before authorizing destructive work.
