A caller hearing “ringing” is not enough
The caller’s ringback tone alone does not establish that your iPhone rang. Watch the receiving phone:
- End any current call. Put the iPhone beside you, lock its screen, and leave its buttons alone during the test.
- Ask a helper whose number is saved in Contacts to call your mobile number. Note the screen, sound, vibration, and whether a missed call appears.
- If only some callers are affected, compare a trusted unsaved number. Do not delete an existing contact to create this test. Change one setting below, then repeat the same call.
- The incoming call appears, but stays silent
- Start with the ring controls, then Focus. Vibration without sound does not prove the speaker is broken.
- Saved contacts ring; unsaved numbers do not
- Start with screening and filtering. A screening prompt heard by the helper is useful evidence.
- No call appears from either number
- Check Focus and forwarding, then contact the carrier if the pattern persists. A missed-call entry or voicemail alone does not identify the cause.
Music volume is not the ring test
Use Apple’s Silent mode controls for your hardware:
- Ring/Silent switch: move it toward the display so orange is not visible. Remove a case if it obstructs the switch; do not force a stuck control.
- Action button: open Settings → Sounds & Haptics and turn Silent mode off. Pressing and holding the Action button toggles silence only when it is assigned to Silent Mode; it may instead open the camera or another action.
In Settings → Sounds & Haptics, raise the ringtone volume to a comfortable level. Depending on iOS, the slider is labeled Ringtone and Alerts, Ringer and Alerts, or sits under Ringtone. Tap Ringtone and select a built-in tone to preview it. Apple documents ringtone selection and volume. Retest the incoming call.
If the volume keeps changing accidentally, turn Change with Buttons off here. Raising volume while a video plays adjusts media; an audible song or alarm does not establish that ringing is enabled.
The ringtone preview is silent or distorted. What next?
Remove a case that covers the speaker opening and look for blockage. Apple allows a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for the opening. Do not insert tools, use liquid, or pry the phone apart. If moving the ringtone slider still gives no sound, its speaker control is dimmed, or distortion persists, Apple recommends service assessment. This is a clue, not a confirmed part diagnosis.
The ring starts loudly, then gets quieter when I look at it.
On Face ID models, Attention Aware features can lower alert volume when the TrueDepth camera detects your attention. To compare, open Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Attention Aware Features and temporarily turn it off, then repeat the call. Apple documents this behavior. This is separate from Require Attention for Face ID; leave that security setting alone. Restore your preference afterward.
Do Not Disturb is only one Focus
Open Control Center: swipe down from the top-right on Face ID models, or up from the bottom on a Home-button iPhone. Tap Focus, then tap the active Focus to turn it off. Check Sleep, Work, Driving, and custom modes as well as Do Not Disturb. Apple explains this control and automatic schedules. Retest once.
If calls return, review Settings → Focus → the affected Focus. Check its time, location, or app schedule; Sleep can follow a Health sleep schedule. Keep the mode if it is useful, but adjust who can reach you: under People, inspect the allow/silence list and call permissions. Apple documents allowed callers and repeated-call exceptions. Those exceptions can explain why one caller rings and another does not.
If Focus keeps returning, review Share Across Devices in Settings → Focus. Apple allows Focus settings to be shared with devices signed into the same Apple Account.
Record the original settings and restore the protections you want after testing. Do not test or change settings while driving.
A quiet unknown call may be intentional
On iOS 18 and later, open Settings → Apps → Phone. On iOS 17 and earlier, Phone is directly in Settings. Look for the control your version provides:
Apple distinguishes screening from filtering. The Unknown Callers filter moves call records into a separate list; it is not the same control as silencing. In Phone, check the filter menu in Calls (Unified layout) or Recents (Classic layout), including Unknown Callers and Spam. Spam calls may be silenced. If a legitimate call is mislabeled, ask the carrier or filtering-app provider to review it.
Only one person affected? Review Blocked Contacts. In iOS 26, Apple places it under Settings → Privacy & Security; older versions use Phone → Blocked Contacts. If your menu differs, search Settings for “Blocked Contacts.” Unblock only someone you intend to hear from, then retest. A blocked caller can still leave voicemail without a notification.
Check delivery before replacing a speaker
With Focus off, open Phone settings as above and check Call Forwarding. If forwarding is unintended, turn it off and retest. If the option is absent or a work line is managed, ask the carrier or administrator; carrier-side forwarding and call filters may need their help.
For a safe phone, restart once using Apple’s model-specific instructions, then repeat the saved-contact call. If it shows SOS, No Service, or Searching, use the cellular-service guide. Working Wi-Fi or messages alone does not prove your mobile number can receive calls.
Still no call? Contact the carrier with the test time, affected number/line, caller’s result, and location. Ask about outages, account restrictions, forwarding, spam filtering, and incoming-call routing—especially after a number transfer or SIM change. Apple directs unresolved call-delivery problems to the carrier. With two SIM lines, report which number fails; do not delete an eSIM.
On Wi-Fi or cellular, open Settings → General → About and accept a carrier-update prompt if offered, following Apple’s carrier-settings guide. Before an iOS update, back up important data; then check General → Software Update and follow Apple’s update instructions.
Keep the evidence. Keep the data.
Erase All Content and Settings deletes personal content. These checks do not require an erase, restore, or eSIM deletion.
Should I reset network settings?
Ask the carrier first when calls never arrive. Apple includes Reset Network Settings in its call troubleshooting, but it removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and network, VPN, and APN settings. It does not erase your photos. It is a separate operation from erasing all content, and is not a useful first step for a call already visible on screen. Get administrator help on a managed phone.
Arrange repair assessment if ringtone previews remain silent or distorted, a switch is damaged, or the problem followed a drop, spill, or repair. Ask Apple Support for diagnostics if the carrier clears call delivery but the problem persists. Stop repeating resets or ordering a speaker from the symptom alone.
Send the iPhone model and iOS version (Settings → General → About), when it began, saved-versus-unsaved results, whether calls appeared on screen, ringtone-preview result, Focus/filter settings, damage history, and backup status. Crop private numbers and messages from screenshots; never send your passcode.
Sources & scope
Official Apple guidance checked October 13, 2026. This is a source-based owner checklist, not a hands-on diagnosis. Availability and menu labels vary; follow your installed version.
- Silence iPhone and change sounds and vibrations — hardware controls, ringtone volume, and tone selection.
- Attention Aware features — alert volume on Face ID models.
- No sound or distorted speaker sound — cleaning boundary and service clues.
- Turn on or schedule a Focus and allow or silence people — schedules and call exceptions; Focus setup covers sharing across devices.
- Manage unknown callers and manage blocked contacts — screening, call lists, and version-specific blocking.
- Calls fail or cannot be received — carrier, forwarding, and network-reset consequences.
- Restart iPhone, update carrier settings, and update iOS — deliberate software steps.
- Erase iPhone — data-loss boundary; reset settings explains what is retained.
