Laptop won't turn on? Trace where power stops.
Dead MacBook, Windows laptop, Chromebook, or gaming laptop? Use the bench rail below to get safe first steps, avoid making it worse, and send me a repair brief that actually helps diagnose it.
Choose the closest symptom. I will mark where the power path usually stops and add it to your bench ticket.
Do this before you press power again.
A dead laptop can still be recoverable. The trick is knowing when a safe reset helps and when another power attempt can make the repair harder.
Stop if it is wet, hot, swollen, or smells burnt
Unplug it. Do not charge it. Do not use rice, heat, a hair dryer, or repeated power attempts. Put a swollen battery device on a hard surface.
Remove docks, hubs, drives, and extras
Disconnect monitors, printers, USB drives, docks, hubs, SD cards, and external gear. A bad accessory can keep a laptop from booting cleanly.
Try one safe reset, not ten
If there are no danger signs, one power-drain attempt is fine. Repeated cycling is not diagnosis, especially if your files matter.
Tap anything that happened.
If one of these fuses trips, the page disables the DIY reset path and builds a safer text message instead.
One controlled power drain.
If no hazard fuses are tripped, unplug the charger, hold power for 20 seconds, reconnect power, wait 30 seconds, then try once. The timer adds the result to your bench ticket.
Ready if there are no hazard signs.
Toggle what you know. If the meter points at the port, bring the charger too.
Which kind of dead is it?
People say "won't turn on" for several different failures. These are the clues I use before I ever order parts.
Data note: If your files matter more than the laptop, say that first. Some repairs should be handled as data recovery before normal troubleshooting.
Could be outlet, charger, cable, USB-C/DC jack, battery protection, board short, or liquid damage.
Often battery, power button/top case, embedded controller, BIOS/firmware, or board-level power issue.
May not be no-power. Could be display, backlight, RAM, GPU, boot drive, or firmware.
Shorted component, bad battery, thermal protection, board fault, or spill corrosion.
Battery failure, charging circuit issue, battery connector, or power management problem.
Could be debris, worn cable, damaged port, USB-C board, or motherboard-side charging failure.
Diagnosis follows the power path.
No guessing. I isolate the cheap/simple failures before treating it like a board problem.
Charger negotiation
Wattage, cable behavior, USB-C handshake, MagSafe/DC output, outlet and adapter sanity check.
Port inspection
Loose ports, bent pins, debris, liquid residue, burn marks, and cable angle failures.
Battery isolation
Swelling, protection state, dead packs, connector problems, and whether it should power without battery.
Board rails
Shorts, missing rails, corrosion, power button/top case faults, and logic board or motherboard paths.
Data decision
If the repair is not worth it, we talk data recovery or replacement before money goes into parts.

Honest repair filter
If a low-value Chromebook has a board failure, I will tell you. If the data matters, we change the plan.
Send a better first message.
Most laptop repair messages start as "it is broken, how much?" This gives me enough to answer faster.
Hi Samuel - my laptop won't turn on.

Straight answers before you bring it in.
Why won't my laptop turn on even when it is plugged in?expand_more
It can be as simple as a charger or as serious as a board short. The main suspects are outlet, charger, cable, USB-C/DC port, battery, embedded controller, power button, liquid damage, or motherboard/logic board rails.
Should I keep pressing the power button?expand_more
No. One controlled reset attempt is enough if there are no hazard signs. Repeated power cycling is especially risky after liquid, heat, swelling, or burning smells.
My laptop has no lights at all. Is it the charger or motherboard?expand_more
Maybe either. No lights can point to charger/cable, port, battery protection, or board-level failure. Bring the charger so I can test the full path.
My keyboard lights up but the screen is black. Is that no power?expand_more
Usually not. That may be a display, backlight, RAM, GPU, firmware, or boot issue. It is still diagnosable, but the repair path is different from a totally dead laptop.
Can you fix a MacBook that won't turn on?expand_more
Yes. MacBook Air and MacBook Pro no-power work can involve USB-C charging, battery, liquid damage, top case, firmware, or logic board diagnosis. For newer MacBooks with soldered storage, getting the board alive can matter for data access.
Can you fix Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and Surface laptops?expand_more
Yes. Windows laptop no-power cases often involve charger wattage, DC jack or USB-C port, battery, screen-vs-power confusion, motherboard faults, or firmware problems.
Can a bad battery stop a laptop from turning on?expand_more
Yes. Some laptops will run from charger with a bad battery, and some will not behave normally until the battery path is isolated. Swollen batteries should not be used or charged.
How do I know if the charging port is broken?expand_more
Common signs are a loose cable, charging only at an angle, no charger light, intermittent charging, warmth near the port, or visible debris/damage. Do not force the plug.
Can my files be saved from a dead laptop?expand_more
Often. A dead laptop does not always mean dead data. Recovery depends on drive health, encryption, model design, and whether storage is removable or soldered. Tell me if data matters first.
Will no-power repair erase my data?expand_more
Normal hardware diagnosis does not require erasing data. If any repair path risks data, I will tell you before proceeding.
How much does it cost to fix a laptop that won't turn on?expand_more
It depends on where power stops. Charger, battery, and port issues are usually simpler; board-level or liquid damage cases need diagnosis before a real quote. I give the quote before parts or repair work.
Should I bring or mail the charger?expand_more
Yes, if the problem involves power or charging. Charger behavior is part of the diagnosis, especially for USB-C laptops and high-wattage gaming laptops.
Do you offer no-power laptop repair by mail in Idaho?expand_more
Yes, when it makes sense for the device and symptom. Text first with the model and problem before shipping anything.
What if the laptop is not worth fixing?expand_more
I will say so. If the repair costs too much compared to replacement, we can focus on data recovery, migration, or replacement advice instead.
Dead laptop on the bench?
Text me the symptom, charger behavior, and whether the data matters. If you do not know the model, send photos of the bottom label, charger, and port.
